Starter Memory: Shopping with Haley
They are in a tent-town in the desert. On a quest! Elan is letting Roy worry about the details, but he knows it's important and there are bad guys also looking for the thing they are looking for. Belkar complains about how they can't use magic as a shortcut, and then Durkon gets pickpocketed, and Haley pick-pockets the pickpockets. Elan is disappointed, because the string she finds is given to Belkar's cat, not him.
V makes a fuss about his familiar, which no one else remembers him having, but V argues has been here all along. Elan decides pretending to have a familiar is fun, and makes an illusion of one. Anyway, he and Haley and Durkon go look at armor. Haley demonstrates haggling, and the general principle of female armor design (aka less is more). Elan tries to haggle, and ends up paying more than the asking price for a Belt of Charisma.
Then Haley points out a palm tree as 'the scout of an army' to Durkon and he goes off to look at them, while she and Elan go to look at maps. They're looking for a country called Tyrinaria, because they are holding Haley's dad ransom. The mapmaker tells them that countries are constantly being overthrown and renamed, so good luck finding ones that don't exist any more. Then she and Elan sneak out because Roy and Belkar come into the map-seller's tent.
Haley explains that she doesn't want to tell Roy about her dad, because she doesn't want Roy to think she'll abandon their mission. Haley also has a Thing about revealing personal information to people: Elan is an exception because 'boyfriend' is almost family. Aww....
Elan doesn't get it -- he was taught to be friendly and open by his mother (a waitress) -- but he understands it's important to Haley.
- He was part of a group. He'll remember Haley and Roy's names.

- Durkon is suspicious about trees; V is a magic user and has an imaginary friend raven that they can see now; Belkar is surly and has a cat.
- Armor! Also maps! (The blue bit is ocean.) Haggling!
- He has a mother who waits tables and taught him to be friendly.
- Haley isn't good at telling people about herself, and doesn't want Roy and Durkon to know that her dad is in prison. Elan will try to keep the secret. He might actually succeed, because it would be hurtful, not funny for him not to.
